Konga Beat 1.0.1 and Konga Launcher available now!

The time has finally come! Konga Launcher and the latest version of Konga Beat are now live. Here's a rundown of what's available starting today and what's ahead:

Out Now

Konga Beat 1.0.1 - Windows (Download) [Patch Notes]

This is a pretty straightforward update that addresses some of the bugs and quality-of-life issues raised by the community. Among the changes is a rework of the metronome. From the beginning, the metronome has proven tricky to implement, but I'm hoping this current implementation will make it more useful.

Konga Launcher 0.9.0 - Windows, Mac, Linux (Download)

As I discussed in my previous post, loading custom tracks into Donkey Konga 2 and 3 can be a pain, especially if you are only interested in playing custom tracks. The process should be as effortless as possible, so I've spent the past couple of weeks hacking away at Konga Launcher, an application that streamlines the process.

To start, you'll need to tell the launcher where you currently have Dolphin installed. Then you'll load a copy of either Donkey Konga 2 (US/EU) or 3:

Once the game is loaded, create or select a playlist and import a custom song package:

That's it! Now, just click the play button, and the game will launch with all the songs in your playlist.

I wanted Konga Launcher to be available on any PC platform officially supported by Dolphin, so I made it my mission to learn how to build and release an application for Windows, Mac, and Linux concurrently. It was the perfect excuse to dive into multiplatform development. Building Flatpaks and Apple-approved disk images presented quite the challenge as a total newbie, but the end result made it totally worth the effort. I'm a simple man, so seeing something like this is, to put it plainly, exceptionally rad:

The launcher works on all these platforms! How cool is that? This has been such a fun experience that I want to continue making multiplatform applications wherever possible. I don't know if that means bringing Konga Beat to Mac and Linux, but it's certainly a possibility.

Coming Soon

Konga Beat and Konga Launcher Integration

As it stands, Konga Beat and Konga Launcher are completely independent applications with no meaningful capacity to communicate with one another. Now that Konga Launcher's core functionality is complete, I plan on developing an optional system allowing Konga Beat users to quickly load their work-in-progress project into Donkey Konga 2 or 3 and launch the game using Konga Launcher. I aim for this to be a one-click solution in Konga Beat and should have more details about how it works in the next few weeks.

Konga Launcher 1.0 + Going Open Source

Other than the planned KB+KL integration, I'm working on improving the launcher's presentation, user experience, and general stability. I expect Konga Launcher's 1.0 release to drop sometime in January or February. Once it hits 1.0, I will also release the source code on GitHub under the MIT license.

In Summary

Konga Beat 1.0.1 and Konga Launcher 0.9.0 are available now. Additional updates are planned for both Konga Beat and Konga Launcher. Konga Launcher will also be open source in the coming months.

Please give them a try and let me know what you think. Happy holidays!
